Abba Father

and then me

running after me
coming after me
chasing me down

calling out my name
reminding me who I am
of who I belong to

“Daughter,” you said.
I turned around astonished
Almost asking who you were,
as if I didn’t know
Yet that word, that one word caught my heart off guard

“Daughter,” you said again.
“Abba, is that you? Abba Father, is that you?” I said, as if my eyes were blind
and I could not see
In a fatherless world of perfectionism
and survival of my soul
My breath nearly left me
My soul was shaking

I knew this One
I had heard about Him all of my life
And hoped the stories were true
I knew Him
Deep within I knew
“Abba Father, thank God You’re real and You came. You came for me.”
With these words I ran to Him
My heart wide open
into His arms wide open

This daughter
Full of grief
Heart bleeding
Hurting so deeply
And angry, so angry
That he had been taken
The father I’d always hoped to get to know left this life
No stable ground

Loss untold
and grief beyond understanding
As it goes

And only You
Only You
My Abba Father
Could relieve this suffering
Only you could heal this broken heart
Only you could remove the shame and darkness
That dampened my soul for more years than I wish to recall

Abba Father
You father the fatherless
You comfort the motherless
You answer the cries of the brokenhearted
and you heal the wounded soul

Mystery Unimaginable

May my life be the song of love I sing back to you
Because you’ve given me life and you’ve been so kind
Gratitude and thanksgiving this day I choose

A Heart Overflowing

Bug 2 - Version 2

Little girl looked up at Abba and her heart was filled with joy. Her smile went from ear to ear and no one could take this away from her. Her heart overflowed with thankfulness for Abba.

Abba picked little girl up and held her tight. He loved little girl beyond words and beyond measure. He loved how little girl had begun to trust him. Abba knew all of little girl’s ways, he knew the life she had come from and he was so proud of her for letting herself trust him.

Abba and little girl were quite a pair. She had overcome so much just to be with him, in a safe place. He knew this. He had adopted many children before and he knew their difficulties and fears, their struggles and challenges to feel safe and to know they belonged.

Little girl finally knew where she belonged.

Abba’s Love

2846145641_5224f00f1f_z - Version 2

“You’re precious to me, little girl. Do you know that? Do you realize how much I love you and how much I want to be with you every single day?” Abba went on before little girl could even respond.

“You are my daughter, my beloved one. I’m so excited for you to more fully comprehend this,” Abba’s heart overflowed as little girl took in his words, phrase by wonderful phrase.

Little girl could barely take in this great love Abba had shown her and expressed to her day after day. She was learning and receiving, receiving and learning but it was challenging for her to comprehend how real this love was and how deep it went.

She took as much in as she could every day. She knew Abba was telling her the truth and she knew he wasn’t disappointed with her when she couldn’t quite understand how deep, wide and vast his love was for her.

Little girl began to realize that her struggles didn’t make Abba angry with her. She was grateful for this. She was so thankful to be able to come to him no matter how scared or sad she was because he just loved her and brought peace to her heart every time she did.

“Abba, can I just sit with you for awhile today?” Little girl said, standing right beside Abba’s chair. The look in little girl’s face was uneasy and almost distant as she waited to hear his response.

“Of course you can. You know you’re always welcome to sit with me, always welcome!” Abba said as he motioned her to jump up on his lap. “Why are you sad today, little girl?”

“I’m not sad, I mean, I’m just thinking about some things,” little girl almost stuttered through the words. Little girl had learned that Abba would always receive her, not begrudgingly out of duty but rather because he wanted to. She also knew he loved her a lot.

Despite what she had come to understand, little girl was afraid to share her heart with Abba today. She was nervous that he would not continue loving her because she still felt so insecure. She wondered if he would tire of her brokenness the way many before him had tired of her.

“Little girl, I’m not like them. I’m not like all the others. I’m not angry with you or sick of you because your heart hurts. I love you exactly the way you are today. You are not too much, my sweet girl, you are not too much. I love you beyond your comprehension and my love doesn’t wane.”

Abba held little girl tight as the tears of joy and sadness mixed together rolled down her face.

Abba picked little girl up and spun her around. Little girl loved being spun around by Abba. Abba was so happy today. Abba loved little girl so much and was so glad that she was his.

“Little girl, do you have any idea how much I love you?!” Abba exclaimed. “It’s wonderful having you in the family! You will always be my daughter.”

Little girl’s heart drank these words in as if they were water quenching a deep thirst on a very hot day. As she received his words and his affection, her heart came alive afresh.

Abba’s words were so much more than just words. His words were like power and life and love and joy and so many good and wonderful things. Abba’s words sunk deep inside little girl’s being. She basked in his words and just being with him. Little girl was so glad to be Abba’s daughter.

Little Girl’s (& all of our) Journey – Why in the world does he love me like this?

Encountering Abba’s Heart

Little girl really enjoyed Abba. She enjoyed being with him, going on adventures with him and simply hearing the sound of his voice every day. Little girl couldn’t be happier.

Abba had adopted little girl some time ago and she was so surprised at how much he loved her. She didn’t quite know what to do with it some days. She wasn’t used to the kindness of a father. Her experiences with fathers in the past had mostly brought disappoint and fear.

Little girl hadn’t experienced love like Abba’s love before. It was as if little girl didn’t have to do anything to make Abba love her. He just loved her because she was his little girl. She had always hoped for this but she sometimes wondered if it was real.

Little girl had been told she needed to be good and then she would be accepted and adopted. She always tried to be good but she went years without being adopted, until Abba came and got her.

Little girl wondered if she needed to try to be perfect in order for Abba to continue to love her and keep her.

All of these things were rolling around in her heart. “Little girl, did you know that I love you just because you were born? Did you know you can’t do anything to make me love you more, and you can’t do anything to make me love you less?”

Abba’s words startled little girl. It was as if Abba knew what she was thinking and she wondered if that was okay. Her surprise showed on her face.

“Little girl, you’re a wonderful daughter. Did you know that? I love who you are and who you will become. I just love to be with you every day and watch you learn and grow. You are a delight to my heart and I love you because I love you!”

Just as little girl had been surprised a moment ago, she was caught off guard again by Abba’s words. She began to think about his words and what they meant for her but then she couldn’t help herself. It was as if the words Abba had just spoken took on a life of their own and hit her like a wave and submerged her in the beauty of his love. A huge smile enveloped little girl’s face. She couldn’t contain her joy. She leaned back on Abba’s chest, closed her eyes and just received his wonderful love for her.

Encountering Abba’s Heart

Little girl woke up with Abba’s song in her head. She loved his song. It had been in her head since she heard it that early morning a few days before.

Little girl had been learning more and more about his love daily. When she heard his song of love over her, it was made real to her in a way she hadn’t experienced before.

Little girl went to find Abba in his usual morning spot. As she approached him she looked into his eyes and they pierced her heart. Little girl ran and jumped into his arms. She buried her face in his chest, weeping as she felt his great love for her.

Abba just held her and let her cry. He loved little girl so much. He loved how she simply believed him and easily received his love for her daily.

Encountering Abba’s Heart

Abba’s Words

As little girl spent time with Abba, she began to feel different. She had found so much hope and life and joy in her heart. She was so thankful to be a part of Abba’s family. She couldn’t remember how life had been before.

Little girl loved to sit in Abba’s lap and look out at the green hills and the sea beyond them. She loved watching the animals and butterflies every morning with Abba. She loved talking to him and sharing with him.

As little girl felt more at home and safer with Abba, her heart settled more and more. She felt less anxious day by day. She didn’t worry as much.

Little girl became more and more settled in her identity as Abba’s child. As this happened, his words and talks with her began to be her favorite things. More than the beautiful hills and the sea, the fun animals and the butterflies, and even more than sharing her own thoughts with Abba, little girl loved hearing Abba’s words.

Abba’s words felt tangible to her. They felt real and strong and safe. She didn’t know quite how to describe this, but she knew that every time he spoke to her she felt safer and more like his daughter and she knew everything would be okay.

Day 18: Worth

Little girl woke up early and ran to jump in Abba’s lap, as was their morning routine. She woke up and couldn’t wait to be with Abba. This never grew old to little girl. And it never grew old to Abba.

Little girl sat quietly in Abba’s arms and looked out at the beautiful trees and grass, remembering her encounter with the beautiful teal butterfly just days ago. She sat and stayed quiet for quite some time.

Abba sat quietly always anticipating the questions and thoughts little girl had. She was very happy to be with Abba and she always told him this.

“Abba, can I sit on your lap every morning everyday for the rest of my life?” Little girl blurted out.

“I would love for you to do that if you want to,” Abba replied.

“I want to, every day for the rest of my life,” little girl said after she’d thought about it for a few minutes.

Then little girl sat back and rested in Abba’s lap, very content. She would never forget all he had done for her.

Day 17: Offer

Little girl woke up one morning tossing and turning. She dreamt that she had to leave Abba’s house. She awoke filled with fear, wondering what was true.

She ran to find Abba. He was sitting outside watching the sunrise over those hills He remembered so well. He heard little girl steadily approaching. He waited for her to jump into his lap like she did every morning.

She got to him and she stopped short. She stared at the ground beneath her feet. She wouldn’t look up. This saddened Abba’s heart. He quickly got on his knees, picked her up and lifted her eyes to look right into his.

Little girl tried to look away because she felt sadness and then shame at the idea of having to leave. Abba moved her gaze back to his eyes filled with love for her.

“Little girl, I have an offer for you. How about you give me your sadness today and I’ll give you my joy.”

“But do I have to leave?” little girl whispered.

“NEVER,” Abba exclaimed with boldness, “You never have to leave. You are mine forever! I adopted you forever.”

The sadness little girl had been cloaked in lifted and she remembered the day of her adoption and she believed Abba.
