The remembrance draws near
A day marking
The beginning of promises long unfulfilled
To remember and to be thankful
To hold the desires for hope and peace near

To recall
The mighty exodus
Out of generations of slavery
Into generations of promise

What a story
What a hope
Blood on the lintels
Rushed, hurried

A centuries-old ache for this suffering to end
Nearly missed the coming hope

Despondency and bondage
Etched upon the souls
Making “the shema” so hard to conceive of
So challenging to believe

Will this suffering ever end?
Will we ever be free?

Promise and covenant long forgotten
By the multitude of children
But remembered by the One

A deliverer chosen
An unworthy man slow of speech rises
A man arguing with the Almighty rises

What should I tell them?
Will they believe me?
What if it gets worse for them?
What then, O G-d, what then?

STOP
Stop arguing with Me

I hear the groaning of My people
I remember My covenant
I see them
I know their sorrows
I am finished with this cruel bondage
My people have undergone

Answer that it is I who have heard their groaning
It is I who have heard their cry
The G-d of their fathers
Tell them it is I who will deliver

The story progresses
Larger than life
Greater than anything the world
Had ever seen before
Or has seen since

The One
The Father
Whose children
Were suffering under cruelty and sadness
Would wait no longer

The day came
The deliverer arose
The blood of the lamb on the doorposts
Covering them

The mass exodus
Out of Egypt
Out of bondage

Running away from slavery
Towards a promise
And a hope
Nearly forgotten
Nearly replaced with emptiness and pain

Yet remembered
Still remembered
By the One
Who gave the promise
And gives the hope

Remember today
The deliverance
Given through
The promise,
The hope

When He saw you in bondage
And heard your cries
He remembered
And He answered

Happy Passover & Chag Pesach Sameach!

Poem based on excerpts from Exodus 2 – 15.

For more on the Passover and the Festival of Unleavened Bread see Exodus 12 – 13, Leviticus 23 or Ezekiel 45.

“The Shema” is the most famous Biblical prayer/confession for the Jewish community worldwide throughout most of its history. It is prayed twice a day by many and on holidays and the Sabbath. It is found in Deuteronomy 6:4-9. For more info check out http://www.aish.com/jl/m/pb/48954656.html

I am joining with katemotaung.com for Five Minute Friday. The goal is to write for five minutes about a word. No extreme editing; no worrying about perfect grammar, font, or punctuation. Unscripted. Unedited. Real.

The prompt is Unite.

To be honest, I wrote longer than five minutes and didn’t mention “unite” although it was in my mind relating to the Passover story, deliverance and redemption. Enjoy!

bring Your people home – day 20

Abba’s Heartbeat for Israel

Bring Your People Home

Abba, Your people Israel cannot find You today
Abba, Your firstborn Son is hurting and lost
without You
Abba, would You visit the hearts of the sons of Israel
with Your tender mercy and kindness
Would You show them Your great love for them
Abba, please minister Your heart and Your holy desire
to the ones You love, the ones You made covenant with

You are their merciful Father
Filled with lovingkindness and steadfast mercy,
relenting from harm, patient in love
You are their G-d
They are Your children

O Abba, in my day and in my time
Please bring restoration to Israel
Please bring redemption to Jerusalem
Please raise up a people who love You and love Your people

Abba, raise up friends of Your heart
Raise up ones filled with Your love,
Your Spirit, Your comfort
Abba, raise up a people who love
beyond themselves
Who live in the testimony of who You are,
Who long for Your heart’s desire for Israel
to come to pass
Abba, break in today on the heart of Your people
And draw them home
Bring them near to You once again

restore Zion – day 18

Every Day for Thirty-One Days

Today’s Prompt: Taste

retore Zion

Abba, connect our hearts with Yours today
Related to Your people Israel
And let our prayers reach Your ears
And reach Your heart
That the answers would rain down upon
Israel today

Abba, good Father of Israel
Would You open eyes to see,
Open ears to hear,
and soften hearts to believe
Would You let many taste and see Your great goodness
to them, and to all

Abba, restore Israel’s vision
Let them see
Restore Israel’s soul
Let them believe
Restore Israel’s hope
May this be an hour of hope restored
Great G-d of hope
G-d who restores the brokenhearted

Abba, would You bring redemption to Zion
Would You pour out restoration like rain,
the former and latter rain together
For Zion’s sake
For Jerusalem
That Zion would shine with righteousness
That Jerusalem would burn with salvation

Abba, this is Your desire
Satisfy Your own heart
Bring Israel home to You

Thank You, great G-d of restoration

Today’s Prompt: Adjust

hearts to turn & be healed

Abba, where my mind is blinded and I cannot see
Adjust my vision
Where my heart cannot enter in
Remove the veil

Your people Israel are Your firstborn
Yet for many years, decades, centuries
We’ve not seen nor understood

How is this, that our minds are blinded and our hearts are not free?
How is this, that we say we want Your heart yet we don’t love our elder brother?
How is it, that blindness of mind and hardness of heart
still prevail?
And we cannot see Your Word clearly at times

Abba, why is it so hard to believe You love us outside of our works?
Why are we so prone to desire being right rather than being righteous?
Abba, we need the cleansing from iniquity and the washing of the Word and the Spirit

We’ve missed so much of what You said about Israel
In our own self-righteousness
Thinking we were better
Yet Abba, we’re not
We need Your mercy
Like Israel needs Your mercy

Please come and adjust our minds, our hearts, our understanding
That eyes to see, ears to hear and hearts to turn and be healed,
To love our brother Israel
We would have

That in turn
We would ache for this for Israel
Abba, give Your beloved Israel eyes to see, ears to hear, hearts to turn to You and be healed
Let this be our desire

Abba’s Heartbeat for Israel

I’m veering off course today because it is Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement (Leviticus 16). The Jewish community in every place goes through prayers of repentance asking for forgiveness and atonement on this day every year. I am sharing a prayer of repentance and hope it will resonate and draw you nearer to G-d.

Forgive me for not trusting You
Forgive me for not coming to You on the basis of who You are
Forgive me for not obeying You
Forgive me for not getting up early to hear Your word
Forgive me for running about and busyness
Forgive me for not searching my heart and not searching Your word
but rather searching other’s words to satisfy my soul
Forgive me for doing the very thing I see as weakness and sin in others
Forgive me for trusting in my own ways instead of trusting in You
Forgive me Father, Forgive me Abba

Cleanse me from all unrighteousness, O God
Forgive me for aching for Your Kingdom without living it
Abba, please bridge this gap
Between my holy longing and Your great desire

Forgive me for pleasing myself instead of pleasing You
Forgive me for hatred in my heart and walking in the flesh
Instead of walking in the Spirit from whom I have life

May You find forgiveness and be written in the Book of Life today.

Abba, please come

Have you ever felt desperate in waiting
The knowledge that if He doesn’t come
There’s no way forward for you

Desperate, pressed beyond measure
Wondering if He’ll ever come

Will You come
You say You will
You said You would
You’ve done it before

O Abba, My Father
I need Your help today
I need Your help more than I did yesterday
I need Your life and Your light and Your hope
to break in and lead Me to the water that is living,
to the rock that is higher

Abba, make a way where there seems to be no way
Abba, make a way for Israel
Where there seems to be no safe place
Find Israel a home in You
Let Israel find their rest in You

Abba, You are good, You are kind
This is not in vain
Let my life and my losses
not be in vain
Let the ache of my heart be satisfied in You
Let the ache of Israel’s heart be satisfied in You

Thank you Abba
You are a good Abba

great G-d, Father to Israel

The battle rages
Another day,
The hatred rises

There is Israel
There is G-d
There is the Holy G-d of Israel

Shema Israel, Adonai Eloheinu, Adonai Echad
Hear, O Israel, The Lord our G-d, The Lord is One

There is one G-d and one Father, one Maker of all
He is one, His name is one
The Holy One of Israel
No other like Him
The Giver of life
The only one righteous

May Adonai who is the Giver of life
Fight for and protect lives all throughout Israel
May the people in the land He chose
Be saved and delivered today and this Shabbat

Abba, Your people perish
Please save them, please deliver Your firstborn
There is no other name above Your name

Baruch Atah Adonai Eloheinu Melech ha’Olam
Blessed are You O Lord G-d Kind of the universe

Please have mercy on Your people
Please give shalom this Shabbat

Thank You, O great G-d, King of the universe
